Livingseeds.co.za is a family concern, the idea was born from the many requests that we get for seed every year, as well as the large number of people that give or send us seed every year. In addition, Livingseeds is not just about heirloom and open pollinated seeds, it’s about becoming self-sustainable and living life as it should be, slower and with more enjoyment. There are two prortions to our site, the first is the blog, where I get to write what I want and often it’s not about seeds. The second portion is the online store, this is where you can browse South AFrica’s largest heirloom and Open pollinated seed collection, naturally we would appreciate the occasional purchase.
Heirloom and open pollinated seeds we belive are a necessity to every thinking person on this planet. Unfortunately very few people undersand the long-term implications of not having heirloom and open pollinated seed readily available.For those of you that “get it” you will understand that these seeds are what links us to our past and may just allow us to survive unencumbered and free of corporate meddling in the future.
Livingseeds was born with the current resurgence in growing heirloom vegetables. The demand for heirloom varieties was there, however up to this point, there has been no publically accessible source of heirloom seeds for South Africans.We hope that through this site we will be able to provide you and your family with the best producing, tasting as well as the healthiest vegetables that you have taken the time, effort and pleasure to grow yourself.
South Africa has been isolated from the rest of the world with regards to Heirloom vegetables and international heritage seeds, ordinary people are unable to legally import seed into this country without jumping through the host of expensive and rigorous phyto-sanitary regulatory hoops that are currently in place. Fortunatley we have been collecting heirloom and open pollinated seed for many years now and we have built up a considerable collection that we grow ourselves. This is an important point for us as we are soley responsible for the seed that is sold.
There exists a large base of South Africans that have been growing and seed saving traditional heirloom varieties year after year. Our family started collecting seeds varieties as a hobby, mainly as there was a passion for the different tastes and flavours that were available. The idea of Livingseeds was born from a need to be self sustainable and at the same time, doing this by using and protecting traditional varieties that are available in South Africa. Fortunately, we have been able to collect and swap seeds over many years with gardeners that have kept and grown seeds that have local, national and international histories. This website is testament to those people that have openly shared their seeds with us, we in-turn have taken it to the next step and made these botanical jewels available to everyone that understands the importance of growing a vegetable that has the ability to be self perpetuating for generations.
Our love for heirloom and open pollinated varieties, has enabled us to amass a considerable (and growing) collection of heirloom and open pollinated seeds, that we hope will inspire you to start on your own journey down the path of heirloom and open pollinated vegetables.
