Alium cepa var proliferum
This is a small bulbing onion that is just ever so awesome. They don't produce big bulbs, but what they lack in size they make-up for in quantity.
Once planted, the bulbs easily divide, and within a matter of months you can re-divide to increase your stock.
The next great thing is that the plants do not form flowers, the flower head is actually a set of onion bulblets. What happens is that the flower stem falls over and where the bulblets touch the soil, a new batch of onions develops, hence the term "Walking Onions".
These onions have an ancient history and this was one of the staple crops fed to the Jews when they were building the pyramids and enslaved by the Egyptians.
