Barley is a staple grain and the fourth largest grain crop globally, coming in after wheat, rice, and corn. An ancient grain crop known from biblical times, used in the making of breads, as a food for beast and fowl, and in the brewing of beer. Barley has a nutty flavour and is rich in carbohydrates. A winter crop best planted in March and April; it does require a chilly winter to head properly.
