Bulbine frutescens

Bulbine Yellow, also known as Burn Jelly Plant and Cat's Tail is a must-have medicinal plant for any household. The leaf sap can be applied directly to minor wounds, burns, rashes, insect bites, ring worm, dry cracked lips, fever blisters (herpes) and general itches or skin irritation. In our household, the children knew from a very young age that this was their go-to for all of the above and we always had several plants growing around the farm. A tea can also be made as a soothing drink for sore throats, coughs and colds, and may even help relieve mild arthritis symptoms.

Start seed in seedling trays in early spring/autumn and transplant once there are at least 4 true leaves. Can tolerate various soil conditions as long as the soil is well draining. Moderately drought resistant once established. Prefers full sun, but will tolerate semi-shade. Once established, they can spread quite quickly and are easily divided.

When planted in clumps, they make a lovely display in the garden, flowering throughout the year.
