Allium tuberosum

Also known as Oriental Garlic, Asian Chives, Chinese Chives and Garlic Chives. Chinese leeks are one of the smallest leeks, almost resembling a spring onion with a slight tinge of pink on the pale shank. The leaves are popular in Japanese cuisine, where they are tied together in a small bundle, dipped in tempura and deep fried. The white flowers and flower buds make for an interesting addition to salads and stir-fries.

Can remain green throughout the year in very cold areas, the plant will die back and regrow in spring. To achieve a larger pale shank, with a sweet mildly garlic chive flavour, hill the soil around the base of the plants.

Can be harvested year round.
