Scientific name: Cryptolaemus montrouzieri

Originating from Australia, this ladybird was first used againt the Citrus mealybug in California, and has since been introduced worldwide. Used for the control of all stages of mealybugs. Cryptolaemus montrouzieri can also prey on soft scales and aphids, however the beetle is most effective on mealybugs.

Description

All stages of Cryptolaemus montrouzieri prey on mealybugs by seizing them and consuming them entirely. At 21°C a larvae eats more than 250 mealybug nymphs in becoming an adult.

Cryptolaemus montrouzieri lay their eggs in mealybug colonies. The larvae of the Cryptolaemus montrouzieri resemble mealybugs, however they have more hairs covering their bodies. The larvae stops feeding before becoming an adult.

Adults are dark brown beetles with a reddish brown head, anterior thorax, tips of the elytra and an abdomen. Males and Female can be distinguished by the colour difference of the first pair of legs.
