Cichorium intybus

This Italian heirloom is not a true dandelion but a member of the chicory family.

The jagged, dark green leaves have beautiful red stems and mid-veins, and are slightly bitter with a peppery taste. This variety is a hardy plant and is entirely edible, including the flowers, roots, and leaves. Often enjoyed steamed as a side dish and also delicious in a warm salad, this "dandelion" is rich in vitamins A, C & K, iron, calcium, and omegas 3 & 6.

The plant has an upright growth pattern and is less prone to bolting.

Standard packet contains approx. 50 seeds

Petite packet contains approx. 15 seeds

JHB : I've planet these in 30cm deep plastic crates with sandy well draining soil in early spring.

They outgrew my natural dandelions completely. Very strong plants. I have about twenty plants from which I harvest 2 leaves a day for more than 4 months by now.

Taste is peppery akin to cress or mustard, but delicious as a compliment to a green salad.
