Allium tuberosum
Garlic Chives, also known as Chinese or Oriental chives, are an easy-to-grow perennial herb that brings both flavour and flair to South African gardens. Native to central and eastern Asia, this flat-leaved cousin of common chives has become a favourite for cooks and gardeners alike. With strappy, grass-like leaves and delicate white star-shaped flowers, Garlic Chives add charm to borders while delivering a gentle garlic punch in the kitchen.
The flavour is milder than raw garlic, making it perfect for salads, soups, dumplings, eggs and savoury butters. Both the leaves and edible blossoms can be used fresh, chopped into stir-fries or sprinkled over soft cheeses. In many traditional cuisines, including Korean and Chinese, Garlic Chives are prized for their role in flavourful dishes like kimchi and stuffed pancakes.
Start seeds indoors or direct sow them into well-prepared beds in full sun. Sow seeds shallowly, around 3 mm deep, and expect germination within 10 to 14 days at temperatures between 15 and 22 °C. They prefer fertile, well-drained soil and benefit from consistent moisture while establishing.
Mature plants reach around 30 to 50 cm tall and return year after year with minimal care. Regular harvesting of the leaves encourages fresh regrowth. If left to flower, they produce nectar-rich blooms that attract bees and beneficial insects. Trim flower stalks early to extend the leafy harvest or leave them to self-seed for naturalised patches.
