Our BioChar is made on Livingseeds farm using untreated wood off-cuts from from a local furniture factory.
BioChar is one of the best soil amendments available to the home gardener. The biggest issue is actually making the BioChar.
BioChar may look like charcoal and many unscrupulous sellers try passing charcoal off as BioChar. The biggest difference is in the temperatures that BioChar is produced at, which are much higher than for charcoal production.
BioChar is the key ingredient in the amazing "Terra Preta" soil in South America.
BioChar has a number of unique traits that are of interest to the organic gardener.
1) Exceptionally pure form of carbon. BioChar is 100% carbon and nothing else, everything else has been extracted during the production process, leaving a very stable pure product.
2) BioChar has an incredibly high surface are 1g of BioChar has 1 hectare or 10 000 square meters of surface area. This surface area is used by soil biology to create micro ecosystems for them to live in.
3) BioChar exceptional water and nutrient holding capacity. Due to it's massive absorptive properties, BioChar can hold onto an incredible amount of nutrients that can be made available to your soil and plants.
4) Due to it's purity, BioChar will remain stable and active in your soil for up to 1000 years. How amazing is that!!!
BioChar needs to be charged before use, and using it neat without being '"charged" will have negative results in your soil.
We recommend using Fertilis vermicasts in a one to one ratio to charge your BioChar.
