Tagetes patula (nana double)

An attractive addition to your garden; also beneficial as a medicinal, edible flower crop, insect deterrent as well as a pollinator attractant.

The short bushy plants produce double flowers that have a resemblance to miniature pom poms with gold and red blooms attracting bees, butterflies, parasitic wasps and hover flies into your garden.

Marigolds are easy to grow and care for, and do best in full sun. Being a trap crop, they are more susceptible to diseases and common pest problem, and tend to attract pests like red spider mites and white fly away from your main crops.

This variety outperforms all other marigold species for repelling nematodes. Their roots release alpha terthienyl which inhibits the hatching of nematode eggs, thereby controlling the nematode population. This only works if planted consistently for many years with results being evident in years 2-5.

Pick the flower buds off as soon as they start dying to encourage the production of flowers.

The flowers and leaves can be used in drinks or to flavour foods. The dried flowers are usually used as a dye and can also be used as an alternative for saffron.
