Papaver rhoeas
The Flanders poppy has a rich history commemorating the First World War. Traditionally known as a field poppy or corn poppy it grows readily in disturbed soil. The Flanders poppy as become a symbol of the sacrifice of the troops in World War I, with an annual Poppy Day being commemorated at various dates around the world.
In South Africa we commemorate all of our fallen on the 11th of November every year.
This poppy is really easy to grow and is best planted in early to mid winter, once the soil starts to cool. Poppies do not like to be transplanted so direct sowing is advisable. Cold tolerant and really easy to grow.
