Capsicum chinense

This is something really special! There are so many "original Bhut seeds," and each one is different when grown out, that for all intents and purposes, the original Bhut Jolokia strain has been lost.

Livingseeds is proud to present to you an original Bhut variety from Jorhat, a city in the Assam state of India, right next to Nagaland that was the original source of the Bhut Jolokia / Ghost Pepper.

The surprising thing is, we have had this variety for a decade, growing it out every second or third year, but never listing it on our site. It was only once we spoke to the original supplier of the seed that we realised this is probably one of the closest, pure, kissing-cousin strains to the original Bhut Jolokia.

This seed was brought into South Africa over 15 years ago by an immigrant storekeeper, Rajen. The variety was grown by his wife every year. It was only by chance that we struck up a conversation about curry and hot peppers and this pepper was brought to light... Naturally, seed was exchanged. Another discussion subsequently led us to believe that we may actually have something really special here. So, we made a plan to grow enough to sell in order to keep the seed in circulation.

Jorhat Bhut is a really great prolific strain that shows reliable consistency in pod shape. If you are looking for a pure Bhut type that can be traced directly back to the city of Jorhat, this is your chance.

It boasts all the typical Bhut characteristics; its pod shape is consistent, as are the heat and flavour profiles. This is a pepper worthy of any serious pepper collector's attention.
