Corchorus capsularis
Jute is from the Bengal region in India and is part of the hibiscus family. A very versatile fibre is extracted from the jute plant. These fibres can be spun into coarse strong threads to make cloth sacks. Fibres are also woven into curtains, carpets, hessian cloths, material for chair coverings and the backing of linoleum flooring.
The plants stalks are as thick as a finger and grow rapidly, reaching a whopping 3.5 m tall. The leaves are conspicuously serrated. The plants produce yellow flowers, which once they have died down, indicates that the jute is nearing harvest maturity.
Jute grows well in a warm climate with a well-draining, sandy loam soil.
