Ocimum basilicum
Licorice basil, a.k.a. Anise basil, is a modern variant of Thai basil, native to Southeast Asia. The 50-60cm tall plant boasts slightly serrated and narrow leaves supported on ornamental purple stems.
This variety adds a lovely liquorice flavour to food that can be a bit overpowering if you are heavy-handed. A little goes a long way! It also carries a number of health benefits such as treating headaches and upset stomachs – not to mention that it also makes an excellent mosquito repellent!
