Phaseolus lunatus

South Africa's very own lima bean variety. Still grown in certain parts of the Cape, this bean was named after Jan van Riebeeck, who was "Die Here van die Kaap" from 1652-1662.

The story goes that he sent these beans over to "the Queen" as these were the only beans that "she" would eat. The Queen in question is unknown as King William the III was too young to be married and there was no Royal Family on the throne in the Netherlands at the time; they were ruled by Stadholders and not royalty at that juncture in history.
