Brassica oleracea gemmifera
Long Island is a lovely heirloom. A dwarf variety of Brussels sprout that originated from Long Island, New York in the 1890s. A great variety that produces well, especially in well-improved soil. This variety prefers cooler weather and will develop a more robust and tempting flavour if exposed to light frost. The sprouts ripen in succession from the base upwards. It is best to remove the lower leaves to assist in picking, but keep in mind to leave enough leaves for the plant to produce properly.
This variety can be enjoyed sauteed on the stove top, roasted in the oven or even popped in the air fryer for tasty, crispy sprouts.
