Luffa

This is a Livingseeds family heirloom, grown for years by our very own Ouma, who received seed from a farmer in the Mpumalanga district. It's a slightly smaller fruit than the European Loofah, and we find that the "weave" is finer and not quite as coarse. If you leave the fruit to ripen on the vine, you can grow your very own loofah sponges that are perfect for pamper sessions.

Plant with LOTS of compost and allow the 10-15m vines to grow off the ground.

Ready for harvest around 95 days.

Standard packet contains approx. 15 seeds

Petite packet contains approx. 5 seeds

These loofahs love lots of heat, as soon as the cold hits - it will slow down. Easy to germinate, the harder part is getting them to maturity. The trick is to get the critters to stop munching on the fruits, luckily there are plenty! Then when dried there are lots of seeds. Very happy with this variety.

I live in Hillcrest, KZN and having great sucess with these loofahs. I bought the petite pack and have 5 plants successfully germinate with 3 plants ultimately surviving a bad hail storm. They grow really quickly and are looking great, with lots of fruit so far. I would really recomend having them hang like in the picture as they seem happiest off the ground.

I got 1 to germinate from my petite pack, and its growing better and better as the weather cools :) I would have TONS of loofahs if not for the pumpkin fly decimating them all. But one or two loofahs have made it and are getting huge. Super chuffed to be growing our own loofahs! Awesome!
