Macrocheles robustulus
For targeted biological pest control against:
- Sciarid fly eggs, larvae, and pupae (House flies, stable flies, biting flies etc)
- Thrips pupae
- Lyprauta larvae
How it works
Mode of action
The predatory mites feed on the eggs and hatching larvae of sciarid flies, thrips pupae, and other soil-dwelling insects. The mites appear in and on the soil and at the base of plant stems. The reduction of the infestation level occurs at a steady rate preventing the fly eggs hatching and/or the larvae growing into adults.
Directions for use
Application
- Turn and shake the cardboard cylinder gently before use
- Spread the material evenly on soil or planting medium (not on plastic)
Dosage
The dosage of Macro-Mite depends on climate, crop, planting medium, and pest density and should always be adjusted to the particular situation. Start introduction preventively or as soon as the first pests are detected in the crop. Introduction rates typically range from 100-500 per m2/release. Consult a Koppert advisor or a recognised distributor of Koppert products for advice on the best strategy for your situation.
We typically advise a minimum of 3 releases over a 6 - 10 week period to ensure that you create a strong population of mites that are capable to controlling you pest issues.
Environmental conditions
For optimal results, the soil has to be moist, rich in organic matter, and have a loose structure. The minimum temperature for successful use of Macro-Mite is 15°C.
Combined use
For thrips control: Macro-Mite should be combined with generalist predatory mites (Amblydromalus limonicus, Amblyseius andersoni, Amblyseius swirskii, Neoseiulus cucumeris) and/or Orius spp.
For fly control: Macro-Mite should be combined with BioWasp and the Trap-it fly traps. Using these three solutions will target the Adult Flies, the Pupae and the eggs / hatching larvae, ensuring that you target the complete life-cycle of the fly.
