Tropaeolum majus

Nasturtium or Kappertjies in Afrikaans, makes a beautiful addition to your garden. Compact bushes with light green variegated leaves and a colourful array of sunshine yellow and crimson red blooms. These Nastutiums do exceptionally well in containers, adding bold colour to your patio or planted out in the garden as a colourful bed filler.

The flowers and leaves are edible with a peppery, tangy flavour that adds an unusual depth to your dishes. Nasturtiums are also called nose twisters or nose tweakers due to their peppery kick and the reaction that follows when you partake of them. The flowers are somewhat sweeter and make a lovely addition to salads or as an edible garnish. The leaves can be used to make a flavourful pesto and the seeds can be pickled and used as an alternative to capers.

Easy to grow and not too fussy, enjoying full sun or partial shade. In regions with very hot summers, they tend to wilt quickly and benefit from partial shade.
