Virgina tobacco is also known as flue cured tobacco, due to the original method of curing the leaves in a barn with heat from flue pipes. Virgina tobacco have a higher chlorophyll content and thus have darker green leaves than Burley tobacco but lighter leaves than those of Dark fire-cured and dark air-cured varieties.

Ripe leaves are harvested off the plants as they mature and placed either on stick, racks or in boxes to cure. Virgina tobacco leaves develop their colour, texture and sweet scent when they lose moisture during the curing process. Cured leaves are light brown to dark orange in colour.
