Antirrhinum majus
Oh, the childlike wonder of snapdragon flowers! Adults and children alike cannot resist the temptation of 'making the flowers talk'. Known as Leeubekkies in Afrikaans, these colourful beauties make superb border flowers in your flower beds with their short growth habit and abundant flowers from early spring, providing a burst of colour when everything is still dreary from winter.
Snapdragons can be a little tricky requiring cooler temperatures to germinate. Place the seeds in the fridge for 2 weeks before planting. For best results sow into seedling trays 8 weeks before you want to plant them out. Surface sow the tiny seeds onto a moist germination mix. Use a humidity dome to keep the moisture in and prevent the soil and seed from drying out. Our grow trays with the humidity dome are perfect for this. Once transplanted and growing, cut the top of the plant back to 3-4 sets of leaves to encourage bushing; this will give you more flower spikes for a lovely show of blooms.
