How to grow microgreens
These quick tips will have you producing your own microgreens at a fraction of the cost of store-bought microgreens.
- Microgreens are basically densely grown seedlings that are cut at the cotyledon (seed leaf) stage.
- Most seeds benefit from an initial dark growth phase, and many varieties benefit from being weighted (2-3 days).
- Once germinated, bright light is an important requirement for healthy, tasty microgreens.
- Shallow trays with drainage holes are important (see The Livingseeds Microgreen Trays).
- Fill trays with a good, well-enriched, fine soil mix.
- Soak the seed for 4-8 hours (See the table for specific variety info).
- Thoroughly moisten the soil, sprinkle your microgreens seed of choice onto the mix, and cover lightly.
- Germination takes approx. 3-6 days and then another approx. 10-14 days to harvest.
- Cut when they are less than 6cm tall for microgreens, or more than 4 true leaves for baby leaf.
- Set up successive trays for a continual harvest.
