Antidesma venosum
A semi-evergreen to evergreen tree found in parts of Africa, including the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Limpopo. These trees prefer sandy soils, moist bushveld and wooded grassland areas to grow.
The trees are easily grown from seed and are fast growers, however they are not frost tolerant.
The trees are dioecious, so fruiting requires both male and female trees.
The Male trees produce long and thin, dull-yellow catkins that are at the end of newly grown twigs. The female trees produce thin and shorter red and less fluffy catkins at the ends of twigs. Flowering usually occurs between October and January.
The fruits grow in tassels (hence its name) with small oval berries that have a sweet and similar flavour to a mulberry. They ripen from a pale yellow colour to blood red and turn black when ripe. The fruits usually develop from January to May.
