Solanum lycopersicum
This tomato was given to us by Alan Reynolds in 2011 who received it from a friend that collected it in the Northeast of Rwanda. Alan has given us many new and exciting seed varieties, many of which are already listed in our catalogue. At first planting, this variety was segregating heavily and it looked like it was going to be a dismal failure.
It was a toss-up: Do we save seed or scrap the whole variety? This is a common question we ask ourselves when evaluating grow-outs of seed given to us. The fruit had a wonderful flavour and the plants were definitely spider-mite resistant, so we decided to save seed from the 3 plants that were the most similar. Over the last 10 years, we've planted the variety on and off, selecting for the best-tasting fruits and most uniform plants.
In the last 2 years, a truly exceptional variety has come to the fore.
This year, we present to you Rwanda, collected from a roadside vendor in Rwanda. Sublimely tasty and sweet, heat-tolerant, obscenely productive, spider mite-resistant – an all-round magnificent tomato.
