Valeriana officinalis

Valerian has been prized as a medicinal herb for centuries, having a wide range of uses. As much as it is medically useful, it is also an extremely attractive ornamental in the garden, with its sweet scented pink and white flowers and pretty, lacy, almost fern-like foliage.

It is said that the flowers were originally used in the making of perfumes many centuries ago. The most common use of Valerian today is the medicinal benefits it contains to aid sleeping disorders, pain and anxiety. Many over the counter sedative and anti anxiety medicines contain Valerian root extract.

The plants prefer a more sunny spot in the garden and well draining soil. The plants can self seed and spread very easily due to its rhizomes.

(Please consult your medical practitioner before using Valerian for any of its medicinal properties.)
