Capsicum annuum
The popularity of these chillis is definitely not due to heat, but what they lack in heat they make up for in flavour. A very popular Japanese sweet pepper that is most commonly used green, pickled, fried, or rolled in salt and oil and blistered over a hot fire, battered tempura style, in stir fries and even raw in salad.
A wonderfully prolific producer of 12-15cm long pods on compact bushes, that ripen from a light green to red. Although it has a spicy flavour profile, these are considered to be more of a sweet pepper.
