Tulbaghia violaceae
A perfect evergreen perennial to use as a landscaping plant as a filler, a border, or even as its own feature with its deep green leaves and pretty show of mauve flowers for months on end. The leaves and flowers are edible and can be added to salads to add flavour and colour, finely chopped and added to a soup or stew at the last minute give the dish a lovely lift in both appearance and flavour.
Traditionally, Wild Garlic was used to treat fevers and colds, asthma and Tuberculosis, decoctions were administered as enemas to assist with stomach problems and the leaves were thought to assist with cancer of the oesophagus. Generally speaking, Wild Garlic has antibacterial and antifungal properties.
Plant in spring in trays, once large enough, transplant to a bed where they can be left undisturbed. Can take 2-3 years to flower, so patience is required.
